Sharing accurate tax advice on platforms like Twitter or Instagram is really tough. This is because everyone's tax situation is different, and getting any tax breaks depends a lot on these personal details. When we try to squeeze complicated tax rules into a simple picture, a quick video, or a short tweet, we end up leaving out important stuff. This can end up giving people the wrong idea about taxes, leading them to make mistakes that could cost them.

Under rule §262, you can't deduct costs for anything that's for personal, family, or living reasons. This means if your animal is a pet (meaning it's mainly for companionship), you usually can't deduct what you spend on them, as per Treasury Regulation §1.262-1(b)(3).

Since "pet" suggests the animal is for companionship, we'll talk about these costs as "animal expenses" that might be deductible.

If the animal isn't mainly for personal companionship, you might be able to deduct some costs. This could be as a §162 business expense if the animal is part of your business, a §170 charitable expense if it's related to charity work, or a §213 medical expense if it's for specific medical reasons.
